New opportunities for Day Care
North Tyneside Council
Day care services are a much valued and needed resource for many older people in North Tyneside.
Whilst satisfaction from people using the current services is very high, some services are limited to Monday to Friday, with only a small number offering weekend provision.
The report to cabinet, which will be considered on Monday 8 March, proposes that in order to better meet people’s needs, future day care services will be split between a community resource model and a modernised building based model.
The community resource model will work with people to support them to access community, family and social networks.
The building based model recognises and respects the wishes of many older people who enjoy existing day care services but aims to improve the choice and flexibility of these services, with a greater choice of providers and more flexible opening times and wider range of activities.
The report adds that feedback has been sought from, people who currently use day care services and their carers, current providers of the services and health and social care professionals.
The Community and Health Care Forum has recently carried out further consultation on the council’s behalf to ensure that the new services are what people need.
Cllr Leslie Miller, cabinet member for Adult Social Care, said: “Day care services are a vital lifeline for many of our older residents.
“That’s why it’s vitally important that the services they receive meet their needs. And we want to ensure that specialist provision, such as services for people with dementia, is of the very highest standard.
“I’m pleased that our team is ensuring people have the opportunity to give their views on how they would like to see services provided in future.”
