Westminster's health and social care team has been recognised as the best in London for its outstanding work helping residents with learning disabilities.

NHS London commended Westminster council and NHS Westminster in identifying and addressing the health needs of people living with disabilities in central London.

Westminster is the only area in the capital to have been awarded a top-rated 'green score' in this area.

The health authority praised the council for its "excellent work in developing services which will improve the health and wellbeing of people with learning disabilities" in the area.

Cllr Daniel Astaire, Westminster's cabinet member for society, family and adult services, said: "We are delighted that Westminster's adults services department and NHS Westminster have been recognised for their work with some of the city's most vulnerable residents.

"This is a great achievement and a pat on the back for all the hard-working staff in the department.

"Getting a top score is a tribute to the priority given by the council to addressing the health inequalities still faced by many people with learning disabilities."

The results form part of London’s first annual health self assessment exercise report.

The report also said the council demonstrated "evidence of good partnership working across all areas and community services" as well as examples of "positive experiences from people with learning disabilities and their family carers"
