Disabled shoppers reassured over Shop Mobility scheme

Disabled shoppers are being reassured that a Shopmobility scheme will be part of Carmarthen’s new retail development when it opens in the Spring.

Carmarthenshire County Council is working with St Catherine’s Walk developers Simons Construction to plan for the scheme, which lends manual and powered wheelchairs and scooters to members of the public with limited mobility.

The scheme would help them to enjoy the new £74million retail development which is set to include Debenhams, an Apollo gold multiplex cinema, 950-space car park, restaurants and a wide range of shops. It is due to be launched on April 30, 2010.

The authority’s property development advisor, Cyril Davies, said: “Carmarthenshire County Council is committed to bringing this successful mobility scheme to Carmarthen town centre.

“It works very well in other parts of the country, and I’m sure will be welcomed by mobility impaired shoppers at Carmarthen’s new retail development.

“Further information about the exact location of the Shop Mobility store within the development will be released in due course.” Shopmobility is for anyone, young or old, whether their disability is temporary or permanent.

It is available for those with injuries, long or short-term disabilities, or anyone who needs help with mobility to use their local shops.

Cllr Pat Jones, executive board member for health and social care, said: “This Shopmobility scheme will provide a new level of freedom for many people who live in Carmarthenshire, and who are visiting the county for pleasure.

“We are working closely with Simons Construction to make this scheme part of the new shopping development at St Catherine’s Walk.

“I’m sure it will be welcomed by shoppers with impaired mobility, as well as by retailers throughout Carmarthen town centre – not just those in the new development - and I look forward to seeing the scheme in action in Carmarthen.”
