Radio 1 and Radio 1Xtra kickstart Summer Surgery campaign in Newquay
The Surgery's Aled Haydn Jones will be heading to Newquay to broadcast a special live show marking the start of the latest social action campaign across both radio networks.
The Summer Surgery – a one stop shop for advice this summer on BBC Radio 1 and BBC Radio 1Xtra.
From Sunday 25 July to Thursday 29 July Aled will be hosting a live surgery each night from 9pm which will be simulcast across the two stations. Kicking off with the show in Newquay on Sunday, each evening Aled, along with our resident Surgery experts, will be offering advice on the issues that are important to listeners during the summer months.
Dr Stuart Flanagan joins Aled in Newquay and Dr Mel Sayers will be on call with Aled from Monday to Thursday.
As young people all over Britain are gearing up for their first festival experience, first trip abroad with friends, first summer job or just simply embarking on their first summer of discovery, The Summer Surgery will be there to help tackle the big decisions, questions and problems in young peoples' lives at this time of year – sex, drugs, alcohol, body image, jobs, money and travel.
Radio 1Xtra's Gemma Cairney will be joining Aled in Newquay and over the weekend of the 24 and 25 July they will be meeting up with young people on holiday, finding out what they are getting up to and chatting to some of the organisations and projects based in the seaside town. They will be reporting back into the daytime shows on both networks over the weekend.
Aled Haydn Jones says: "I'm really excited to be broadcasting The Surgery for five consecutive nights. The feedback from our listeners is that the summer is when they are experiencing things for the first time and The Surgery will be there to help them make informed choices."
Ben Cooper, Deputy Controller Radio 1 and Radio 1Xtra, adds: "The Surgery and our social action campaigns are an integral and very important part of our offering for younger listeners. With The Summer Surgery we hope to offer support and advice in a way that's both fun and practical."
Across the week, Radio 1 and Radio 1Xtra DJs will be getting involved and reflecting some of The Surgery themes in their shows including a specially themed music mix by Jaguar Skills.
Newsbeat will also be featuring relevant content in some of their news programmes.
At bbc.co.uk/radio1 and bbc.co.uk/1xtra listeners will be able to get additional information and advice on a wide range of topics and also find some interactive games, videos and photos. As well as on-air advice, each night from 8pm listeners will also have access to expert advice via social media networks.
The Surgery with Aled on Sunday 1 August on Radio 1 will look back at the highlights of the previous week.
